Supporting Practice Nurses with pre-registration nurse placements and the implementation of new NMC supervision and assessment standards.
40 % of our Practice Nurses may retire in the next five years and we need to grow a workforce pipeline to ensure a steady flow of nurses into primary care. One of the ways we can do this is for pre-registration nurses to have placements in GP practices during their training which encourages newly qualified nurses into careers in primary care. Placements of students on professional pre-registration programmes are a fundamental part of succession planning. Nursing placements are currently incentivised by a tariff payment which has increased in 2020 by 14% by Health Education England.
41 out of our 84 GP practices offer placements to pre-registration nurses, this number needs to grow if we want a flow of newly qualified nurses into primary care. The Training Hub working in partnership with the University of Worcester will support Practice Nurses with the addition of four GPN Mentors working 1 day a week each across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The role of the GPN Mentors is to support Practice Nurses with pre-registration nurse placements and the implementation of new NMC supervision and assessment standards.
New NMC Standards for Education (2018) – Changes to nurse mentorship.
The NMC has published new Standards for student supervision and assessment to be implemented in September 2019.

MSc Professional Practice (General Practice Nursing)
The MSc Professional Practice (General Practice Nursing) is designed for mid-career GPNs who want to progress their careers and is a really flexible alternative for established GPNs who may not want to commit to a full MSc straightaway or may not want to follow a career as an ACP. The MSc is online and flexible which allows nurses to study at a pace that suits them on a modular basis if they prefer. This avoids the commitment of signing up to a full MSc from the start.
There is a wide choice of modules so GPNs can create a bespoke course that is tailored towards their specific interests and career aspirations. Potential career pathways are developing a specialist interest/ becoming a lead within the practice for a specific area of practice nursing; taking up a strategic or leadership role within the PCN or ICS; exploring a clinical academic role. Non-medical prescribing can be taken as part of the MSc and can be credited in if already undertaken.
An overview is available at the link below but any GPNs who would like to know more or talk through their options is advised to contact me at sue.shortland@bcu.ac.uk and I can speak with them to help them decide which path to take.
Each 20 credit module costs £720 (there may be a small increase for September 2022 I am waiting to hear)

Collaborative Trees
GPN mentors and Nina Lealan displaying a collaborative poster presentation at the QNI conference in London, demonstrating the work of Hereford and Worcestershire CCG and GPN mentors achievements over the past 12months.
From little acorns to oak trees, in a celebration of the hard work and achievements made within this time.
The poster was very well received and although it didn’t win, we received very positive feedback from all the delegates about the work being done to support our GPN’s in practice and increasing our student nurse placements across the county.
